International Network of Inclusive Higher Education Systems (IHES Network)

BACKGROUND

The International Network of Inclusive Higher Education Systems arises from the project "Inclusive Higher Education Systems for students with intellectual disabilities" (IHES) (2021-1-ES01-KA220-HED-000032084) co-funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, Strategic Partnerships in the Higher Education sector (KA203)1 , running from 2021 to 2024.

The results of the project demonstrate how university systems can become important agents of social inclusion for students with intellectual disabilities. The consortium consisted of six partners from four European countries:

1. Pablo de Olavide University (coordinator)
2. Asociación Paz y Bien Sevilla (Spain)
3. University of Florence (until 28 February) (Italy)
4. University of Siena (Italy)
5. Pixel-Associazione Culturale (Italy)
6. Universal Learning Systems (Ireland)
7. Iscte- University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal).

They have developed:

  • An online programme on inclusion and independent living for people with intellectual disabilities at universities
  • A digital handbook on the inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities in higher education systems
  • Recommendations for policy makers on intellectual disabilities in higher education systems with proposals on how universities can be inclusive.
In Europe and internationally, many higher education institutions require methods and tools for the inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities, using effective and well-established models.
